It seemed like just about all of the ways to brew coffee had been thought up. It seemed like every new product was just a fancy variation of a previous one. It seemed like there was no new way to brew coffee under the sun. Then a new IndieGoGo campaign launched: It’s American Press.
It’s American Press is a hands-on brewing device that uses pressure as the mode for coffee extraction. In your typical Aeropress method, you mix the water and coffee grounds in the brewing chamber and allow it to steep for a time before plunging to push the water through the coffee, through the filter, and into the mug.
The American Press method deviates from this in some significant ways. The coffee grounds are contained in a small chamber, a coffee pod, with a 150 micron stainless steel filter. With hot water in the chamber, the user presses the coffee pod down to extract the deliciousness that is coffee.
According to Alexander, the inventor, the process can take between 35 seconds, to four minutes, depending on the grind and other variables. As someone who likes to experiment with coffee brewing, this makes me excited.
Watch coffee emerge from our patented reusable pod technology and then float on top of a column of water that disappears as you press, take control of your coffee with our hands-on brewing technology, and the moment you’re done pressing, there’s no waiting, you’re ready to pour, and enjoy, all without spilling a drop thanks to our carefully designed stainless steel pouring edge.
The well-respected Aeropress is well known for its adaptability to odd and challenging brewing methods. With the addition of the pressure, the simple brewing mechanics can work with almost any variable. Our recipe at Yellow House Coffee uses a medium grind and 176 degree Fahrenheit water. In every other method, that means gross, under-extracted coffee. But not the Aeropress.
I think the American Press, with its innovative use of pressure as a brewing mechanic, is also capable of wildly unique brewing methods and techniques. Coffee geeks should rejoice, because the American Press is going to be one to experiment with.
You can back the American Press now on IndieGoGo. Their early bird specials are all taken, but the next price point, still below retail, is up for grabs at $60 + shipping. You have 32 days to decide if the American Press is right for you.
Come May 2016, will you wish you had backed it?
