Coffee subscription boxes just keep getting more creative. I recently had the pleasure of testing out a sample box from Joe’s Brew Club, an experience I will not soon forget.

Unlike some other clubs, subscriptions, and boxes, Joe’s Brew Club came very well presented. Everything down to the box it was shipped in was created just for this special occasion of ripping into cardboard to find not only coffee, but chocolate and biscotti as well.

Everything appeared incredible, but how did it taste?

Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans

These little guys surprised me. I was expecting an espresso-roasted bean covered in thick, milky chocolate. Instead, the beans were thinly coated in a dark chocolate powder and cocoa. The result wasn’t super sweet, but still pleasant. I didn’t enjoy them on their own, but next to a cappuccino these beans shined.

This dark chocolate bar is very good. My fiancee and I are still snacking on it in small portions to save and savor it.

Four Biscotti

This was my first experience with biscotti ever, and it was a very pleasant one. Though I’ve had the box for nearly two weeks, I’ve only tried to two of the biscotti, the ‘classic almond’ and ‘double chocolate espresso’. Along with the chocolate bar, we’re savoring these for as long as we can! Both biscotti (biscotto?) were great on their own, but even better when dipped into coffee. The sweetness of the biscotti blended well with the chocolaty notes of the coffee.

The chocolate treats were nice, but these biscotti really wrap up Joe’s Brew Club as an experience.

Costa Rica Coffee from Red Rock Roasters

I would argue that the coffee is the most important part of any product or service such as this. This Costa Rican bean from the highland La Reserva Presidente boasted well-rounded chocolate notes and a gentle brightness toward the end of the sip. I was pleased with Red Rock Roasters‘s coffee, but not amazed.

The roast was darker than I typically prefer, but not oily at all. It was not excitingly bright, but not overly roasty. It was a solid medium-dark roasted coffee that paired well with the sweet biscotti.

Yay or Nay?

I really enjoyed the experience that Joe’s Brew Club offered me. Receiving more than roasted coffee was more fun than I anticipated, and the treats that came along were not gimmicky or silly – they were worthwhile. While I desired more from the coffee, I am confident that Joe can and will provide better and better coffees in the coming months.
